Greetings!

Well, I finally popped the distributor and a battery into my 92 MX-3 GS. I talked to the guy I got the car from awhile back, and he said that he was able to get it running, before his brother dropped a bike on the distributor and broke it.

I'd basically just got the car for the steering rack and suspension track width, but now that I got confirmation that it actually runs, I want to play with it and see if it's worth keeping, or parting out as it's in actually very very good condition body-wise.

The ignition lock cylinder is all messed up, so I just took the switch off, and used a screwdriver to turn the switch. nothing happened. so, I checked all the fuses, found the ROOM fuse was blown, so I replaced that. still nothing, although the ignition switch gets pretty warm to the touch. All the breakers in the under-hood box are good, as are the fuses.

As I was typing this, I realized that I didn't check the fuel cut-off switch, so maybe that's it.

but basically, the current symptoms are this: when the switch is turned to the "start" position, the panel lights dim, and the switch heats up, but nothing. I let the clutch out, they brighten, push back down, then they dim again. So, the clutch switch isn't an issue either.

This car doesn't actually have any seats in it, including the little module that plugs into the harness there. Is that something that needs to be attached for the engine to run, like something to control the fuel pump relays or something? I hear no fuel pump turning on at all, so maybe I need to go junkyard diving for that little module. (unless the one from my gtx front clip will work.. hmm, gotta check the plug to see if they're even remotely similar).

Anyway, that's the basic question.

Been sitting for 2 years, Won't turn over, not even a solenoid click. I'll have to check the fuel cut-off switch, but if it's not that, does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

have you beat the starter like a redheaded stepchild yet? If a car was sitting that long with weather changes im sure it could use a good jossle

may sound crazy but does the motor turn over by hand?

I hadn't tried turning over by hand yet, since the starter/solenoid is silent. I did take the end of my ratchet and smack on the starter a bit though, but more like an annoying clingy kid than a red-headed stepchild.

The thing is, the solenoid doesn't even click or anything. I'm going to have to get a 2nd pair of hands, and try measuring the voltage at the starter. In my experience, I've never seen a solenoid rust solid.

So, is the missing module under the driver seat not an issue?

Like I said, i don't hear the fuel pump priming either, so it may be more than just the starter circuit itself.

Check the Fuel Pump Relay. Its a little black box attached to the ECU.

check the chassis grounds

It should crank ,fuel or not,

i wonder if the IGN switch is phucked,or does it have a remote sarter or Alarm?

No remote start or alarm, but someone did wire in a set of foglights, although they're not there anymore. Just the fuse and relay, not even a switch. Triggered off of the low beams, I'm pretty sure.

There was one wire, looked like the standard female spade connector used for chassis grounds, that was disconnected, but I haven't found the exact spot to re-connect it.

It's possible that thie IGN switch is messed up, since the actual lock cylinder was hosed. When I disconnected the switch itself from there, the little pop-metal piece wasbroken off, as well as part of the plastic part that actually turns. So, maybe something's not right in the switch, I'll look into seeing what I can do as far as bypassing the switch entirely.

I'll grab another fuel relay, and a couple tools, and my electrical stuff, and head back out there and give it another go.

Thanks for the pointers, guys, I'll let you know the progress.

Well, seems like there is not a fuel-cut switch at all, at least not that I could find.

I smacked on the starter some more, and heard a bit of a clicking noise, but still no turning. when jumping the starter motor and solenoid directly, it tries but doesn't go.

I'm going to take a couple wrenches out there, and pull the plugs and try to rotate by hand, and yank off the starter too, and take it back home and test it on the bench.

is it a manny?

You could always push it down a hill:D

yes it it's got a manual transmission. It's in a 10x24 storage unit, that's sort of uphill with a big cement lip to push it inside, that would kinda suck. Pretty soon, I'm going to trailer it back home, but I want to do some work on some other things first, so I can get it into the garage and up on jackstands, and not have to tote tools and such out there all the time.
